We want to extend a very special thank you to all the friends of Water Street Art Gallery. Your unfailing support through out the last year and a half has been appreciated. The economy and location have not worked in our favor and we find it in the best interest of the gallery to close.

Our last day of business will be June 30. It is our hope that as the economy improves, we will find a new location better suited to the gallery business.

The gallery blog and the Oklahoma Daily Painters' Blog will remain active. We are staying together as an artist group and will post our search and activities as they occur.

Our opening last evening was so much fun, great food, good friends, art supporters, and of course....artists.

Those who were new to the gallery took the time to stroll through and enjoy the works of fine art always on display.

First arrivals.

Sales were brisk and competition for favorite 6x6's was in evidence.

The exhibit was judged by noted Tulsa artist, Alan Frakes, painter of the immensely popular "dumpster series". First, Second, and Third place ribbons went to Gail Rogers (Henryetta), Anne Spoon (Okmulgee), and Terri Wagner (Kiefer)....in that order. Congratulations to those artists and a big "thank you" to Al.

Tomorrow is Sapulpa's Route 66 Blowout and around 20,000 people are expected for this car and art

show. We expect many of them to visit the gallery and enjoy the Six by Six show.

Plans are in the works for the Six by Six on Route 66 Art Show and Sale with an opening on Thursday evening, June 3, 6 - 9 pm.

As last year, this event is scheduled to coincide with Sapulpa's Route 66 Blowout Car and Art Show on Saturday, June 5. Thousands of people visit Sapulpa for the festivities.

Canvases are available at Water Street Art Gallery or, if you let us know, we will have them available for you to pick up at Ziegler's. Due date for return of canvases is May 27 and they may be turned it at the gallery or at Ziegler's.

2009 show

The 2010 show will hang through July 4. Each canvas will be for sale for $66, 50% of that is paid to the artist, the gallery receives 25%, and 24% goes to charity.

Our charity this year is the CHILDREN'S CLOTHES CLOSET. This wonderful organization operates out of Sapulpa and serves children who attend Sapulpa, Allen Bowden, Pretty Water and Lone Star schools. Children who need clothing and shoes are recommended by DHS, teachers, parents and school nurses. Participating artists are pleased and fortunate to be able to offer support to these kids.

Saturday, May 1st, Water Street Art Gallery had the pleasure of hosting a trunk show of Happy First, the whimsical, artsy, clothing line by Debbie Vinyard. She also has wonderful jewelry and candles in her line. We also had the opportunity to showcase Heather Sleightholm's line, Audrey Eclectic a line of mixed media pieces, that include collage, painting and more. She will be our guest artist for the month of May, so if you didn't get to stop by on Saturday, you still have time to come see her work!! It was a great event!!! Water Street Art Gallery opened its doors one year ago in a quaint area of historic downtown Sapulpa.

Julie Miller and Betty Dalsing are two of the working artists who own and operate Water Street Art Gallery in historic downtown Sapulpa.

Water Street Art Gallery opened its doors one year ago in a quaint area of historic downtown Sapulpa. It is owned and operated by enterprising working artists with a mission to serve the Tulsa metropolitan area. The main gallery of Water Street exposes an 80-foot brick wall plus a vintage pressed tin ceiling. Off the main gallery are smaller display areas and a classroom where classes and workshops are held. In addition to showcasing beautiful fine art by regional artists, this artistic co-op provides a location to teach. Classes are offered in painting, portraiture, drawing, photography, jewelry and mixed media, with demonstrations for adults and children.

Water Street Art Gallery delights the palette of imagination and offers quality pieces by professional artists expressing themselves in diverse mediums including oil, acrylic, ceramics, jewelry, pastel, pencil and photography.

Water Street Art Gallery publicly celebrated its one-year anniversary this April. The following is just a hint of some of the scheduled activities they will be bringing to you this year.

The second annual Route 66 Six-By-Six Art Show will kick off with a reception on Wednesday, June 3 from 6 to 9 pm. Artists and the public are invited to attend. Artists will be submitting 6-inch-by-6-inch canvases to the gallery. Each work of art will be on exhibit and may be purchased for $66 each beginning June 3. Fifty percent of each sale goes to the artist, 25 percent to the gallery, and 25 percent to a local charity to be announced. The event will run in conjunction with Sapulpa’s Route 66 Blowout and will conclude July 4.

Oil painting classes are held each Monday afternoon and evening. Other Monday classes feature palette knife techniques. The focus for Tuesday classes is oil impressionism. On Saturdays you will find classes offered in just about any medium. And there are scheduled workshops throughout the year that focus on popular mediums including collage, fabrics, acrylics and watercolor.

Several artists will be featured in workshops this year, including Heather Sleightholm from Sapulpa. She creates mixed medium whimsical art using watercolor, fabric and collage techniques.

Water Street Gallery will be hosting a Trunk Show featuring Debbie Vinyard, an artist and designer who celebrates “Happy First,” the first of each month, by sending emails to each of her clients.

The first Wednesday of each month includes a gathering for coffee and conversation. Anyone is invited to attend and enjoy coffee and rolls, along with an art demonstration from one of the gallery’s artists. The third Thursday evening of each month features a professional artist doing a demonstration. April’s featured artist was Anne Spoon, who did a still life demonstration in oils.

The philosophy of Water Street Art Gallery is simple: To be artist- and community-friendly and to provide a place for local working artists to sell their art.

MAYFEST INVITATIONAL GALLERY

Two of our Water Street Art Gallery artists, Kathleen Curran and Betty Dalsing, have been invited to participate in the 2010 Mayfest Invitational Exhibit.
The Invitational Gallery will be open for a four-day festival beginning Thursday, May 13 and ending Sunday, May 16. There will be a Gallery opening party Wednesday, May 12, 6 pm-8 pm for artists and guests. The gallery is open after that for public viewing.

Mayfest is an outdoor tribute to the arts and music that is a family-oriented event created to promote a broader knowledge of and appreciation for arts and humanities among serious, as well as casual art lovers.

We all enjoyed watching Anne work her magic. She is an exceptional artist and her still life works are worthy of collecting.

Anne Spoon's Third Thursday Demo

Water Street Art Gallery hosted an oil painting demo last night by our own, Anne Spoon (part of our Third Thursday events). She showed us how she sets up her "still life" and how she goes about the process of beginning a painting. She then took us from the "blocking in process", through the finishing touches. It was quite a treat......Thanks to Anne for a fun and informative evening!!!!

Join the Tuesday Group with Julie Miller as we meet each week from 10 - 2 for an extended class time, launching in April 2010. We will paint in the morning, break for a bag lunch, and then do mixed media projects in the afternoon.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION FOR WATER STREET ART GALLERY

This past Sunday from 3 - 6 pm, Water Street Art Gallery held an open house to celebrate the completion of the first year in business and to welcome our friends and patrons who have supported and encouraged us along the way.

In the accompanying photo, Evelyn Petroski, gallery artist, welcomes a guest and discusses her portrait painting process.

Those attending the open house were treated to new works of art recently added to the gallery and were able to sign up for a drawing for a gallery gift.

We welcome the work of Karen Renfrow from Oklahoma City, OK. Her vibrant works are filled with color and life. Her work will hang until April 30. Prints are available and you will want to see her paintings of old trucks and scenery as she interprets them with oil paint, brush strokes and palette knife. Included in the show are several pieces in watercolor and pen and ink.

PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING CLASS

I am posting some photos from our yesterday's afternoon class. This is such a great group and as you can see, quite talented. I am having a really good time working with them. At least for the start up, we are all painting from one of my photographs, learning to simplify a photograph into shapes, learning how to mix colors we want, and how to apply them to the canvas with a palette knife. I am seeing beautiful results.

There was not much coffee drinking, but we had a good visit and a knitting demonstration. I gave the knitting demo and was surprised I had to look at my book to remember how to purl!! )You know how it is when you are trying to show someone how to do something.) We now have plenty of practice yarn, thanks to Jan H.
JoBeth Force also came and brought her hand beaded jewelry. (she's not a knitter) It was exquisite!!!! The craftsmanship and design work were something to see!!!! Some of the other ladies decided they might need Jo Beth to custom-make some pieces. Truely works of art!!!! It was such a nice surprise. Don't forget the first Wednesday of March (the 3rd) for more C & C!

Julie Miller Artwork Featured at State Capitol Governor's Gallery

MAKING PAPER, MAKING ART, HAVING FUN

THIRD THURSDAY DEMO.

We were fortunate to have Heidi de Contreras, gallery artist, demonstrate the process of paper making. Heidi takes it one step further and turns the result into beautiful art work.

For some of us, this was a new experience having not seen paper prepared this way before. Heidi started with a large bowl, assorted shredded papers, and hot water. Somewhere in the process, a food mixer came into play. She spoke of color and texture and how to achieve different effects.

We all got to try our hand at flattening the wet mixture into shapes and setting it to dry on newspaper. Much fun!

Heidi brought along examples of paper she had made previously and used one to demonstrate how she turns each into a work of art. Photos of the process are posted below.

We had a fun evening visiting with old and new friends. Everyone enjoyed sampling our chili tasting and participating in the drawing for a piece of art work.

Our artists brought in wonderful and new pieces of art for this event and it was a pleasure for us and others to see them.

These works will be hanging for a few weeks, try to get by to see them. For those of you who cannot, I am posting a few photos for you to enjoy.

Our guest artist for January is Dana Hutchins from Bartlesville. Her incredible work can be seen in the second photo. She and other gallery artists have prints available for purchase at the gallery.

We, at the gallery, are having a wonderful holiday season and certainly hope all of you are also.
We still have a a generous array of gifts that range from artist made ornaments and cards to small paintings and other very special small gifts that are reasonably priced for Christmas giving. Shopping at our gallery gives you the opportunity to buy a gift for someone special on your list, a gift that cannot be found anyplace else.

While at the gallery, you will have the opportunity to see the work of the two newest artists to join our group. They are Gail Rogers and Ann Spoon, both oil painters. For this occasion, they and our other gallery artists have painted several small Christmas themed pieces that will become a part of a lucky someones Christmas tradition.

What a treat to have my multi-talented sis-in-law and nephew Jude visit me at the gallery today! It seems that we have budding artists in the family, and so it was a perfect opportunity to get messy together - even mom got in the action. We learned a little about technique, drawing shapes, animals, experimenting with color, using our imagination and just having FUN! We even painted each other when we saw how much we were getting "in" to the medium. Despite the improvised trashbag artist smock, Jude and I managed to paint our sleeves too.

What do you think of our circus train? Jude made sure we remembered the monkeys...they had to ride on top of the train though.

No matter the subject, from landscape to still life to portraiture, the very best way to grow is to paint from life. And it's been said that the foundation of a good painting is a strong composition. When painting from life, carefully plan your composition using a small viewfinder. These are readily available at art supply stores like Hobby Lobby for about $10 (well worth the cost) and are powerful tools for working out a strong composition. They have a sliding section with various painting sizes marked on the side (8 x 10, 9 x 12, etc.) so that you can work out the comp based on the size of your canvas. And, some are a mid-grey color with a small hole in the side so that you can look through it and judge the dark and light values of your scene.

As you look through the viewfinder, move around, squinting along the way so that you simplify the shapes into dark and light objects with a pleasing comp. Decide on a dominant focal point and position that off-center both vertically and horizontally (rule of thirds). Make sure that you don't divide your painting surface directly in half with your horizon line, table surface, etc. It will make for a more interesting composition when segments aren't equally sized. Choose to omit details that detract from or are unnecessary to tell the story of the scene. That's called "creative license".

When planning the view you'd like to paint, learn how to see with your eyes, not your mind. Ask yourself "Do these shapes work together? Is there enough variety in darks and lights to add drama to the painting?" Abstraction simplifies shapes into masses varying in color and value and adds cohesiveness to the scene.

Careful planning before you start your painting will enhance your success and satisfaction.

Julie Miller to be Featured at the Oklahoma State Capitol

The artists of Water Street are thrilled to know that one of their own, Julie Miller will be featured in the Governor's Gallery at the Oklahoma State Capitol from February 8 - April 4, 2010.

The Oklahoma Arts Council maintains three galleries inside the Oklahoma State Capitol. Thursday, November 5th was a very special day for 180 nationally known fine artists. Gilcrease Museum hosted their "American Art in Miniature Show 2009" Reception and Silent Auction last night. Included among the group were three of Water Street's artists: Gail Booth, Gail Rogers and Celeste Vaught. Gail Booth enjoyed the privilege of having her rich, dramatic painting "Pitcher with an Attitude" included in the printed invitation!

Hundreds of entries from around the country were submitted and whittled down to just under 200 works of art included. Dr. Duane King remarked "to make the cut the first year is quite an accomplishment".

The day began with a tour of the museum's current exhibits and of course a "sneak peak" at the show. Included in the afternoon's roster was an art lecture by Tulsa's Mary Russell, an accomplished artist and passionate instructor. Russell discussed with a PowerPoint presentation her painting process and how she sets up and develops her still life paintings. All present carried away practical tips to improve our own works of art.

The evening reception was grand. Hundreds attended and enjoyed the festive atmosphere with the musicians, fine food and drink, and of course the gorgeous art work!

Recognized were all the men and women who worked tirelessly to make the event a rousing success and ensure the continued support of a world class museum right here in our own community.

And what about Water Street's artists in the show? Happily all three of their paintings had red dots at the end of the evening and now enjoy new homes by happy collectors!

PAINTING TIP FROM THE GALLERY GIRLS

Applying oil paint thickly and liberally so that it stands out from the painting surface and maintains the mark of the brush is called impasto. The paint can be applied with a brush or palette knife. The paint should have a buttery consistency and is usually used without medium. If using a brush, the bristle brush will work best because it holds more paint much as the palette knife will. Applying paint in this manner makes it more light reflective and makes a pleasing, tactile surface.

The impasto method is often used by plein air painters. It allows you to cover the canvas more quickly and allows the painter to easily produce an impressionistic, more"painterly" painting.
Knife painting is a versatile and expressive way to create a richly textured surface.

At first, painting with a knife is a bit trickier than painting with a brush but with a little practice you will get the hang of it.

Water Street Art Gallery artist, Heidi de Contrereas, has just returned from a highly successful trip to Taos. She and Ana Stukenborg visited there at the invitation of Brian Lipperd. Brian previously had a studio in Sapulpa and gave portrait demonstrations at our gallery. He has since moved to Taos and established the Lipperd School of Art. Ana will be returning to Taos in January to begin a six month internship with Brian. This is a remarkable opportunity for her.

Heidi, while in Taos, visited a few galleries and was immediately snapped up by the Firenze gallery. They kept one of her paintings and commissioned more work from her. Heidi will be returning to Taos at intervals to deliver new work. We are so happy for her. Congratulations, Heidi!!

Woolaroc Museum, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, has chosen Evelyn Petroski to paint a miniature portrait of former President George W. Bush. This portrait is one of a series of portraits of U.S. presidents to be displayed at Woolaroc. Each miniature is 2 1/2 x 3 1/4 and framed in a gold oval frame. The Bush portrait has been completed and delivered to Woolaroc where it is being framed and prepared for display.

Evelyn is again being honored having been chosen to paint the portrait in miniature of President Barack Obama.

PAINTING DEMONSTRATION IN OIL

Water Street Art Gallery artist, Gail Booth, demonstrated her painting techniques and shared her philosophy of painting with a group of artists and fans on Thursday evening, October 29.

She talked about how she used her very large brushes and showed her palette layout and paint preferences to us.

It was a delightful presentation. Gail is an amazing artist and also funny and sweet and we love her.

Gail begins her landscape demonstration with a block in placing colors strategically to support the composition. Here Gail is using all transparent colors including Holbein's Transparent Orange, Alizarin Crimson and Thalo Violet to do her block in. First she uses a knife to transfer pure pigment to the canvas, then with very large filbert dipped into turps she spreads the wash on her canvas. Finally, Gail takes a cloth and wipes all over the surface to cover the entire canvas. She stresses that using tranparent colors allows the light to transfer through the layers of color and reflect back off the white of the canvas.

UNDERSTANDING TONAL VALUES, a painting tip from the gallery

When you first begin painting it may seem to you that your pictures appear to be flat and lifeless. Most likely, the reason for this is that your value contrasts are not strong enough. It takes courage to make your shadows as dark as they really appear and keep light areas bright enough. But once you become familiar with a concept that might require you to paint something you know to be white as very dark, you will be astounded at the improvement it makes to your finished work, your painting will "sing" with light.

Water Street Art Gallery artist Celeste Vaught displays her "Downtown Dawning" series October 8 - November 15, 2009 at the gallery. Vaught has always loved Tulsa's rich architectural heritage. The urban renewal efforts spurred her on to honor such structures through a series of paintings. "You make Tulsa look like it could be Paris" or "it's nice to see an artist honor the city we live" were remarks made during the recent "Art in the Square" show at Utica Square.

Oil Painters of America Hold Annual Paint Out at Pretty Water Lake, Sapulpa, Ok.

Sapulpa was chosen as one of the sites for the annual OPA paint out. This event was for artists who like to paint outside (en plein air) and several assembled at Pretty Water Lake on Saturday, September 26.

The weather completely cooperated with a temperature in the high seventies and a gentle breeze.

In the photo above, Anne Spoon, event hostess, assists Ida Mae Sells as she checks in before painting. Gift bags were given to each artist, courtesy of Sapulpa Arts.

chose to paint the waterfall.

Visitors stopped by to watch the artists paint and stayed to enjoy the lake.

Fisherman mostly ignored us but at least one was painted into a scene as he angled from the boat dock.

Recent rains had raised the level of the lake and increased the flow of water over the waterfall making it even more attractive to paint.

OPA members Ruth Harris and Alan Frakes are shown in the last two photos, painting with benefit of umbrellas.

Artists from Sapulpa, Tulsa, Edmond, Okmulgee, Henryetta, Picola, and Fort Smith came to participate, paint, and enjoy the day.

After painting, the artists were invited to Water Street Art Gallery in Sapulpa, for refreshments and an opportunity to visit.

We want to thank all the artists who came to paint and we are looking forward to a repeat event next year.

BACK FROM PAINTING IN SANTA FE

We had a wonderful painting experience with John Poon. This was our second workshop with him and both were exceptional. We painted around Santa Fe, in the small town of Cerrillos, and in Lamy.

We went out 3 days early in order to have extra time for painting and found a great spot north of Santa Fe near Pilar. The Rio grande makes a turn there and we painted at the bend of the river. We also painted in the new Cerrillos State Park. We were graced with good weather and good friends with whom to paint.

Authors and Art

The gallery has scheduled our second Authors and Art evening for September 18. We had the first one last spring and it was a very enjoyable evening. It was so entertaining to hear each author talk about their experiences and the journey they took to enable them to write their books. We laughed, cried a little, and thoroughly enjoyed each story. Our own gallery artist, Celeste Vaught, was one of the authors taking part in the first booksigning.

Six authors will make up the panel for our September 18 event. They are: Bob Avey, Peggy Fielding, Jackie King, Romney Nesbitt, Marilyn Pappano, and Gloria Teague.

You should come join us for coffee and cookies and great stories.

Santa Fe Workshop

Gallery artists, Ruth Harris and Betty Dalsing, are leaving for a plein air workshop with noted impressionist artist, John Poon. They are leaving a few days early in order to have some time to paint in the Santa Fe area before the workshop begins on August 31.

As everyone knows, there are many scenic choices such as the ski basin or in the little town of Chico not far away. There are countless plein air painting opportunities right in the heart of Santa Fe as well.

>We will also visit our favorite art supply store in Santa Fe, the Artisan. We browse through the easels and paint and buy a little of this and a little of that. If we are lucky there will be someone working there who will suggest a great painting location for us to try.

So, off we go. We will have photos to show and stories to tell when we return.

OPA Paint Out at Pretty Water Lake

Oil Painters of America has chosen Sapulpa's Pretty Water Lake as the site for one of its national plein air events. This is a wonderful opportunity for plein air painters from all over Oklahoma to paint together at this beautiful location. The lake has a water fall and small bridge as well as long lake views and pretty trees.

Artists wishing to participate should arrive at 9 a.m. with a brown bag lunch. The event will end at 4 p.m. followed by a reception at Water Street Art Gallery in Sapulpa.

Plein Air Painting Competition, Show, and Sale

We are planning an outdoor painting event for October 17, 2009, sponsored by our gallery. We will be setting up our easels and painting on the sidewalks of Sapulpa. The brochure and entry form will soon be available on our website.

When we opened the Water Street Art Gallery, we knew we wanted to have a gallery dedicated to fine art but also one that promoted and fostered art and artists in the community. We feel this event supports that effort.

There are many plein air artists who get together to paint and we wanted to
set up an organized event that recognizes and rewards these fine artists who are so passionate about their work. This competition will be judged and prizes awarded.

Sapulpa is a great location for this event. Route 66 is Sapulpa's main street and Route 66 tourists find it an interesting and historical stop over. The still active and functioning downtown has the original buildings built in the mid-20's when what was once a Creek Indian village was transformed by the railroads and oil boom into a bustling city of 20,000.

This area's first permanent settler was a full blood lower Creek indian of the Kashita tribe of Alabama. Around 185o, he established a trading post about one mile southeast of present day Sapulpa. From that trading post came the birth of Sapulpa.

If you are not a painter, we hope you will be interested in watching the artists as they capture the local scenery. Plan to be in Sapulpa on October 17, visit the local businesses and be at the Water Street Art Gallery between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. for a reception and sale of the day's painting efforts. You might be able to purchase the first place award winning painting.

If you are a plein air painter, watch for the brochure and entry form on this website. It should be published within the next two weeks.

At least four artists from the Water Street Art Gallery will be participating in "Art in the Square" on October 3, 2009. Celeste Vaught, Ruth Harris, Julie Miller, and Betty Dalsing will set up their individual art booths in Utica Square, Tulsa, on that Saturday and display their artwork for sale. Water Street Gallery - Six by Six on Route 66 Art Show

Water Street Gallery proudly announces its first annual Six by Six on Route 66 Blow Out Art Show. The exhibit will hang June 4th through June 20th, 2009. This event is timed to coincide with the one day Sapulpa's Route 66 Blowout Art Show on June 6, 2009. Combined with the Route 66 car show, this event brings thousands of people to Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

A reception will be held Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Gallery located at 16 South Water Street, Sapulpa, Oklahoma 918-227-2009. (Map)

Each six by six will sell for $66. One half of the proceeds will be paid to the artist, one fourth to the gallery for overhead, and one fourth to charity.

Artists may pick up one free canvas at Water Street Gallery beginning April 1, 2009. You may also use your own 6 x 6 x 1.5" deep canvas.

Finished canvases should be returned by May 27, 2009. Your work must be signed, have wire hangers and contact information affixed to the back.

Tulsa Artists to Open Studios for Art Tour

Tulsa - The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition's upcoming Tulsa Art Studio Tour will open the studio doors of 11 Tulsa artists in 9 studios. Visitors can get a glimpse into the creative process and see art in action April 4th-5th from noon until 5 p.m. each day.

For art lovers, such access to the inner workings of artists is a rare opportunity to see the other side of the canvas. Visitors will have the chance to talk with artists, view and buy artwork, and see art being made. The tour is self-guided and presented by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition.

The artists range from photographers and painters to ceramicists and metalsmiths, representing a variety of stages in their art careers. Tour artists include:

A kick-off celebration and exhibit will be held at the Frame Maker Art Gallery, on Friday, March 27th from 5-8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, and guests will have a chance to see examples of artwork from artists on the tour, meet the artists, and purchase tour tickets. This exhibit runs from March 17 - April 11, 2009.

Tickets to the tour include a map and are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Carol Mulcare Wins Award

Mid-March, 2009 marks the opening of Northeast Oklahoma's newest fine art gallery located just off Route 66 in the heart Sapulpa's Art District at 16 S. Water Street. Water Street Art Gallery will feature original fine art by several Oklahoma artists. Original fine art paintings, ceramics and jewelry will be on display for purchase. Throughout the year opening night events are planned.
