WORKSHOP WEEKEND WITH DAN ROBINSON

Water Street Art Gallery was pleased to have Dan Robinson bring his work shop to our gallery.  Those attending received personal attention at the easel and a wealth of information to further their artistic objectives.  Our thanks to Dan and we hope to have him back for another workshop.

I have just returned from teaching a three day workshop at the Water Street Art Gallery in Sapulpa, OK. We had a good class with a great group of students and worked hard all weekend. MAKING PAPER, MAKING ART, HAVING FUN

THIRD THURSDAY DEMO.

We were fortunate to have Heidi de Contreras, gallery artist, demonstrate the process of paper making.  Heidi takes it one step further and turns the result into beautiful art work.

For some of us, this was a new experience having not seen paper prepared this way before. Heidi started with a large bowl, assorted shredded papers, and hot water. Somewhere in the process, a food mixer came into play. She spoke of color and texture and how to achieve different effects.

We all got to try our hand at flattening the wet mixture into shapes and setting it to dry on newspaper. Much fun!

Heidi brought along examples of paper she had made previously and used one to demonstrate how she turns each into a work of art. Photos of the process are posted below.

FRAKES, ONE MAN SHOW AT LLOYD'S GALLERY

Alan Frakes, Water Street Art Gallery

 Alan has received much acclaim for his "dumpster" series, all painted in oil on canvas. You will find some of them in the background of these photos. He is seen here with Betty Dalsing of the Water Street Art Gallery.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS AT THE GALLERY

We, at the gallery, are having a wonderful holiday season and certainly hope all of you are also.
We still have a a generous array of gifts that range from artist made ornaments and cards to small paintings and other very special small gifts that are reasonably priced for Christmas giving. Shopping at our gallery gives you the opportunity to buy a gift for someone special on your list, a gift that cannot be found anyplace else.

While at the gallery, you will have the opportunity to see the work of the two newest artists to join our group. They are Gail Rogers and Ann Spoon, both oil painters. For this occasion, they and our other gallery artists have painted several small Christmas themed pieces that will become a part of a lucky someones Christmas tradition.

Come visit our gallery to shop, visit, and see what we have planned for the coming year. There will be new classes, workshops, and fun events. We will be open late Thursday, Dec. 17, until 8 p.m. Our regular hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE GALLERY

This is becoming such a fun event. We began by inviting ten artists (in addition to our co-op arists) to contribute small works of art for this occasion and were amazed by the beautiful things that came in. Our Christmas Celebration party is this Thursday, December 3, starting at 6:30. Friends, family, customers, everyone has been invited....and, so are you. Come and have a glass of champagne with us and nibble on marvelous, tasty, scrumptious chocolate creations.
You will find special gifts for those special people on your list. We have gift items starting at $4.
There are hand made ornaments.....each a piece of art, cards, christmas jewelry, dichroic glass pieces, pottery, small paintings, and many other items. We hope you will be here....we are saving some chocolate for you.

PAINTING TIP FROM THE GALLERY GIRLS

Applying oil paint thickly and liberally so that it stands out from the painting surface and maintains the mark of the brush is called impasto. The paint can be applied with a brush or palette knife. The paint should have a buttery consistency and is usually used without medium. If using a brush, the bristle brush will work best because it holds more paint much as the palette knife will. Applying paint in this manner makes it more light reflective and makes a pleasing, tactile surface.

The impasto method is often used by plein air painters. It allows you to cover the canvas more quickly and allows the painter to easily produce an impressionistic, more"painterly" painting.
Knife painting is a versatile and expressive way to create a richly textured surface.

At first, painting with a knife is a bit trickier than painting with a brush but with a little practice you will get the hang of it.

.....and then, "HEIDI WENT TO TAOS"

Water Street Art Gallery artist, Heidi de Contrereas, has just returned from a highly successful trip to Taos. She and Ana Stukenborg visited there at the invitation of Brian Lipperd. Brian previously had a studio in Sapulpa and gave portrait demonstrations at our gallery. He has since moved to Taos and established the Lipperd School of Art. Ana will be returning to Taos in January to begin a six month internship with Brian. This is a remarkable opportunity for her.



Heidi, while in Taos, visited a few galleries and was immediately snapped up by the Firenze gallery. They kept one of her paintings and commissioned more work from her. Heidi will be returning to Taos at intervals to deliver new work. We are so happy for her. Congratulations, Heidi!!

WATER STREET ART GALLERY INSTRUCTOR, EVELYN PETROSKI, HONORED.

Woolaroc Museum, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, has chosen Evelyn Petroski to paint a miniature portrait of former President George W. Bush. This portrait is one of a series of portraits of U.S. presidents to be displayed at Woolaroc. Each miniature is 2 1/2 x 3 1/4 and framed in a gold oval frame. The Bush portrait has been completed and delivered to Woolaroc where it is being framed and prepared for display.

Evelyn is again being honored having been chosen to paint the portrait in miniature of President Barack Obama.

Congratulations, Evelyn.

PAINTING DEMONSTRATION IN OIL

Water Street Art Gallery artist, Gail Booth, demonstrated her painting techniques and shared her philosophy of painting with a group of artists and fans on Thursday evening, October 29.

She talked about how she used her very large brushes and showed her palette layout and paint preferences to us.

It was a delightful presentation. Gail is an amazing artist and also funny and sweet and we love her.

UNDERSTANDING TONAL VALUES, a painting tip from the gallery

When you first begin painting it may seem to you that your pictures appear to be flat and lifeless. Most likely, the reason for this is that your value contrasts are not strong enough. It takes courage to make your shadows as dark as they really appear and keep light areas bright enough. But once you become familiar with a concept that might require you to paint something you know to be white as very dark, you will be astounded at the improvement it makes to your finished work, your painting will "sing" with light.

Dalsing & Harris at Mayfest

Water Street Gallery artists Betty Dalsing and Ruth Harris have been invited to participate in the 2009 Tulsa International Mayfest Invitational Gallery exhibit. The exhibit will hang from May 14 through May 17, 2009 at 3rd and Boston, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
